WHAT IS WHISKEY?

A type of alcoholic beverage distilled from fermented grain mash. Different grains are used for different varieties including barley, rye, wheat, and corn. Whiskey must spend some amount of time in wooden casks.

WHAT IS BOURBON?

There are strict laws governing just what a whiskey must be in order to be called “bourbon.” At least 51 percent of the grain used to make bourbon must be corn. Most quality bourbon distillers, however, use 65 to 75 percent corn. Bourbon must be aged in new American white oak barrels that have been charred. To be called a straight bourbon, it must be aged for a minimum of two years. Nothing can be added at bottling or during distillation to enhance or alter the flavor, body, or appearance of the bourbon. 

WHAT IS SMALL BATCH BOURBON?

Small batch bourbons are bottled from a “batch” of barrels that have been mixed prior to bottling. Some of our well-known small batch bourbons include Booker’s, Basil Hayden’s, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, and Woodford Reserve.

WHAT IS SINGLE BARREL BOURBON?

Single barrel bourbons are bottled from one single barrel that meets the distiller’s criteria for perfection. The entire contents of the barrel are bottled before moving on to the next barrel. We at West End Tavern have three single barrels that have been bottled exclusively for us: Buffalo Trace, Eagle Rare, and 1792 Ridgemont Reserve. These bourbons are extremely special in that you can only get them at the West End!

WHERE IS BOURBON MADE?

Bourbon can be made anywhere in the United States. All but a few brands are made in Kentucky. This is because Kentucky is where Bourbon originated and where most distilleries are located. As Kentucky distillers are quick to point out, bourbon is not bourbon unless the label says so.

WHY IS IT CALLED BOURBON?

Bourbon takes its name from Bourbon County, located in the Central Bluegrass region of Kentucky. It was formed from Fayette County in 1785 while still a part of Virginia and was named to honor the French royal family. Bourbon county was also once the major shipping port for distilled spirits headed down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from its ports were stamped with the county’s name, and Bourbon county and whiskey became synonymous.

WHAT IS SCOTCH WHISKY?

Scotch must be produced at a distillery in Scotland and made from water and malted barley. It must be aged in some variety of oak casks for no less than three years and one day. WHISKY VS. WHISKEY Today, the spelling “whisky” is generally used for whiskies distilled in Scotland, Wales, Canada, and Japan, while “whiskey” is used for whiskeys distilled in Ireland and the United States. However, several prominent American brands, such as Maker’s Mark and George Dickel, use the “whisky” spelling.
